What Is Speech-Language Pathology?

Speech-Language Pathology at OneWell

Speech-language pathology (or speech therapy) for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities focuses on helping individuals communicate in ways that work best for them. This may include supporting spoken communication, using communication devices, pictures, or other tools to express wants, needs, and choices. Services also address social communication skills, swallowing and mealtime safety, and changes in thinking or memory. Therapy is personalized to each individual’s goals and daily routines, with an emphasis on functional skills for home, work, and community settings to support independence, participation, and quality of life.

Assistive Technology is never one-size-fits-all. Each solution is personalized to support real-life routines, meaningful goals, and individual needs.

OneWell Speech Therapy Process
Getting Started

The OneWell Speech Therapy Process

Our speech therapy program follows a clear, supportive pathway so families know what to expect from the very first contact through ongoing services.

1. Referral or Request

Services begin with outreach from family, supports coordinators, or providers via email or phone. Our coordinator will then contact the family to discuss the referral.

Referral

2. Document Submission

The program coordinator requests key documents including a copy of the ISP, completed referral forms, and copies of insurance cards.

Submission

3. Intake Meeting

An in-person or virtual meeting introduces families to OneWell, reviews the waiver process, discusses goals, and helps us match the individual with the right therapist.

Intake

4. Orders & Insurance

Our therapy team obtains a signed physician’s order and insurance denial information, then submits a critical revision request for an initial assessment.

Insurance

5. Initial Assessment

A licensed therapist evaluates the individual in their home or community, creating a holistic treatment plan with input from the family and caregivers.

Assessment

6. Second Critical Revision

Following the assessment, we obtain a new physician’s order with the recommended frequency and submit a revision for ongoing treatment units.

Revision

7. Ongoing Care

The therapist provides individualized treatment, adjusting as needed. We integrate family consultation to support progress, with formal reviews every 90 days.
