Home Modifications
Empowering Independence Through Home Modifications by OneWell Health Care
At OneWell Health Care, we recognize that one’s home is not just a place to reside; it’s a sanctuary of independence and comfort. For individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD), it’s crucial that their living environment supports their unique needs and enhances their quality of life. That’s where our Home Modification Services come into play, ensuring that every participant can thrive in a space tailored to their requirements.
Qualifying for Home Modifications
To ensure that our enhanced home modification IDD Services are the right fit, we carefully evaluate each participant’s situation. Qualification is based on two essential criteria:
Necessity Due to Disability
The home modifications must be essential due to the participant's disability or medical needs.
Health, Security, and Accessibility
Modifications must be necessary to ensure the participant's health, security, and accessibility within their home.
Increased Independence
The modifications should enable the participant to function with greater independence in their home.
These criteria are meticulously evaluated through an independent assessment, often conducted by an occupational therapist. This assessment not only determines the necessity of home modifications but also provides recommendations for specific adaptations, such as specialized commodes, showers, or flooring.
Navigating Funding and Cost-Efficiency
As we always prioritize the best interests of our participants, we recognize that home modifications should be funded thoughtfully. We follow a comprehensive process to ensure cost-effectiveness:
Primary and Secondary Insurances
If available, adaptations may need to be submitted through the participant's primary and secondary insurances before utilizing ODP waivers. Documentation of denial from insurance may be required.
Obtaining Three Bids
For modifications exceeding $1,000, we obtain three bids from licensed contractors to determine the most cost-effective option. While participants or caregivers have the flexibility to choose a contractor of their preference, opting for a bid other than the lowest may result in additional costs.
Documented Contractor Contact
In cases where obtaining three bids becomes challenging, our Supports Coordinator maintains documentation of contractors or companies contacted.
Comprehensive Home Modifications
Our Home Modification Services cover a wide array of options, all aimed at ensuring the participant’s health, safety, and accessibility within their home. These modifications include:
- Accessible Alerting Systems: For participants with sensory impairments, we install systems for smoke, fire, and CO2 detection.
- Widened Doorways and Hallways: Enhancing accessibility throughout the home.
- Shatterproof Windows: Replacing glass windowpanes with break-resistant materials, especially for participants with behavioral concerns.
- Slip-Resistant Flooring: Ensuring a safe living environment.
- Kitchen and Bathroom Modifications: Adapting major appliances, sinks, cabinets, and bathroom fixtures to meet individual needs.
- Bedroom and Workroom Modifications: Tailoring bed, wardrobe, desk, shelving, and other furniture to enhance functionality.
- Light and Sound Sensitivity Modifications: Creating spaces that accommodate special sensitivities.
For participants with specific medical needs, adaptations may include air conditioning for temperature regulation, electrical rewiring for life-support equipment, and specialized electric or plumbing systems.
Allocated Budget and Participant Mobility
Our Home Modification Services are allocated with a limit of $20,000 per participant over a 10-year period. In the event of relocation within this timeframe, a new $20,000 allocation is provided. It’s important to note that this falls within the overall ODP waiver cap, without exceeding capped amounts on the P/FDS and Community Living Waivers.

The Impact on Participants and Caregivers
Our Home Modification Services unlock independence and control for participants within their homes. They can access areas that may have been challenging or inaccessible before, enhancing their sense of dignity and autonomy. For caregivers, these adaptations simplify daily care routines, ensuring that participants can maintain their personal hygiene and overall well-being. Additionally, home modifications minimize the risk of household accidents, particularly as participants and caregivers age.
In summary, our Home Modification Services at OneWell Health Care aim to create living spaces that empower individuals with IDD. We’re committed to making homes safe, accessible, and personalized to each participant’s unique needs, enabling them to enjoy their independence to the fullest.
